Welcome to '1% Each Day'

Starting is always the toughest thing to do.

Once you’ve built momentum and you’re cruising, it’s surprising how easy that:

. 1000-words

. A 5km run

. A diet

Can be.

If you’re reading this, you’ve joined to check out my content.

For that alone, I appreciate you.

My Message

I want to break down and put back together the famous motto:

‘Improve 1% each day’

A common motto, but one that I haven't seen delved into as much as I’d like. Not with the motto itself in mind.

So I did it myself and considered ways to put this into practice.

If you apply this motto, it will lead to large-scale progress in anything you want to do.

My Inspiration

The newsletter and its content will be inspired by my thoughts and experiences. Also, my reading in two main areas. Stoicism and the science of habits.

The Science of Habits

The 'habits movement' is where I look for self-improvement advice. In most areas of life, I’d recommend you do to.

The messages coming from these writers include things like:

. Build systems of action to trigger the compound effect.

. Start with small, bite-sized actions.

. Consistency is key.

I plan to give my view on these takes and more.

Why I’m Different

My goal here isn’t to be a parrot for the teachings of other writers.

The way my takes differ is that the science of habits is very ‘front-loaded’.

Meaning, they are all about building a system of habits and achieving progress through the committed follow-through of these habits.

Great!

But what about the chunks of progress we encounter every day that can’t fit into a ‘habit’?

. One-off opportunities

. Reaching out

. Level-ups

I propose that you should have habits. They are the bedrock of improvement.

My view is that you should treat the daily commission of a habit as a 1% gain.

While the habits themselves are in a different category from the one-off steps forward we can take that are non-habitual, on the day, in the moment, they shouldn’t be.

They are all 1% chunks that we should grab at every moment we can.

We should have a radar focused on the world and our goals, and we should grab every inch that radar reveals to us.

Content

The content we will be producing will be:

Articles

I have been writing articles of this nature on my Medium account for a while now.

The issue is that my Medium is a mixed bag, and I have not kept the topics of my articles to one topic at all.

I’m excited to start this newsletter because it allows me to stick to a topic and go into detail, instead of jumping around.

On Medium, I will be rebranding into a ‘Living in China’ blog. The blog will cover more than just the flashy buildings.

I’ll be talking about:

. Fun things to do.

. Life as an English teacher in China.

. The nitty gritty details of moving and living here.

If you’re interested, check it out here.

eBooks

I will be publishing eBooks relating to the topics I discuss in more detail and with a specific focus.

My first one is in the editing stage.

Guess what it's called?

Correct.

‘1% Each Day’.

This will be a giveaway, and my thanks go to anyone who has put their faith in me as a writer.

I will be writing, editing, and publishing eBooks for this newsletter often.

Other titles I am writing:

. The ‘1% Each Day’ Companion

. Knowledge Island

. Anti-habits

Collaborations

This industry is a team sport and far from zero-sum.

Working together is not only beneficial but also more fun.

There is already discussion of a couple podcast appearances, which I’m excited about. Anything I do related to this niche will be here for sure, so stick around.

If there’s something they would like to do together.

Whether it be:

. Recorded discussions.

. Co-authored writing.

. Q&A articles.

My DMs are open. Hit me up.

I’m interested in hearing your ideas.

To all of you

Thanks for reading!

My first 1% of this newsletter journey is complete.
